More like 1/2 alive, and the pain is that it is my laptop.  I replaced
the memory and hd, but it turns out the processor is bad too, and I get
random crashes, shutdowns, and can't do anything that stresses the
processor like using firefox, building, ...  But its enough that I can
ssh into a server.  With screen the crashes and shutdowns are annoying
but at least I don't lose state.

The real fix will happen in the next week or so when a new machine which
will show up, and the electrical and network modifications to my house
are done so that everything be back where it belongs.
