lots of issues with accents or extended characters

OK, so the problem text is coming from direct entry instead of one of the 
data sources. That's good to know. My first guess is that it has something 
to do with the unicode locale. I'll have to see if I can figure out how to 
tell QString how to represent those characters in a way compatible with the 
xml output.
