Nondeterministic failure of "Cite Entry in LyX"

Hi there,

I experience strange problems with citing in kile:
When I try to cite one or more entries, it sometimes works and sometimes 
not.

If it works, everything is fine. If it does not, I only see an empty 
citation tag in kile, like "\cite{}".

When I try the same citing operation over and over again, it works 
statistically every one out of five trials. The success rate does not 
seem to be completely random, but I cannot make out with what it might 
be correlated. Sometimes I get long rows of successes, sometimes low 
rows of failures. Sometimes alternating series. Timing does not have any 
observable effect.

When citing more than one entry, it the probability for success seems to 
be higher, but even that effect is not reliably reproducible.

Does anybody have an idea what the cause might be? Or any ideas how to 
proceed testing? What is the simplest way to connect to the .lyxpipe.in 
without using kile or LyX?
