I might be abusing the pipe handler with QFile or something, I suppose. I 
just tried it, though, and didn't get any failures like you describe, even 
with trying about 10 times.

If you run tellico from the command-line, is there any error output? As for 
monitoring it, you could use cat, although it seems like the output gets 
swallowed without going on to kile.

Something like
cat ~/.lyx/lyxpipe.in

and you should see something like
LYXCMD:tellico:citation-insert:weber-tai1993
