How to debug z39.50 connections?

I am trying to use a Z39.50 server, but I keep getting no results found
messages.

My installs (one on Mandriva, one on Ubuntu Dapper work fine on the
Library of Congress Z39.50 servers. 

As far as I know my settings are according to  the server configuration pages.

I wonder if there is an easy access somewhere to the conversations
between the server and Tellico. 

The server is a semi-public one, so I am not allowed to post its details
here.

On an other topic: How can one initiate searches on data already
recorded?
