If you run from the command-line, it might spit out a few diagnostic 
messages, especially if you compiled with --enable-debug. That's about it, 
though.

For a quick search, type in the edit box in the toolbar, the "quick filter". 
For more complex searches, use the "advanced filter" in he settings menu, 
or Ctrl-J.
