I figured out a way to cross-reference entries, and thought it may be of
general interest.
I didn't discover anything written on the subject except that
cross-referencing proper will require a new data model before it can be
implemented. I'll use a video DB as an example. There are actually two
methods with different advantages.
1)
Setup:
- Create a new field of type "simple text". I called mine "Related
Films".
- Allow grouping, and multiple values, possibly auto-completion for
convenience as well.
Usage:
- Simply enter the titles of related entries, separated by semi-colons.
(No semi-colon after the title, only before.)
- Select the new group in the grouping filter (drop down menu).
Now you will have a list of titles with related entries for each title
which has relatives (cross references).
2)
Setup:
- Create a new field of type "Choice". I called mine "Related
Films".
- Check "Allow Grouping"
- In "Allowed Values" create group names for example "Pink Panther
Related" or "2001 Related". These are separated by semi-colons.
Usage:
- You now have a drop-down selection box with your new groups in the
entry editor. Select the related group for each entry.
- Select your new group "Related Films" from the grouping filter (drop
down menu).
Each method has its advantages, so you can choose the one you prefer.
Any comments would be welcome. If it's useful we can add it to the
documentation.
