Exporting to Palm and limiting the data

this is of course possible. The question is: What is the most elegant
way to do it?

I do not have experiences with im- and exports, but it is probably
possible to export your collection (e.g. in a CSV file) and to import
it into a different collection with restricted items. After this you can
export it into palm format.

But probably you don't want to define all parameters (column-field
mapping, ...) all the time ...

PS: There was a little bug in the palm exporter. See
http://forge.novell.com/pipermail/tellico-users/2007-February/001250.html
It seems that the name in a palm db is restricted to 31 or 32 characters.
To be on the save side we restricted it to 31 and let the 32nd character
just contain an "end of entry" value (0). Do you know whether 32
characters are supported?
