Error: Cannot talk to klauncher

I'm currently running tellico without a window manager under X. The
system has KDE, but kdeinit is not being run on this particular display.
When attempting to do a multiple search, I get the following error:

    Cannot talk to klauncher

This is a modal dialog, and is blocking the other windows. To fix it, I
have to launch a window manager, click okay, and then I see:

If I search manually on Amazon, a solid sample of these results came
back fine. Is there a dependency on a running instance of KDE here? What
else could be going on?
