I understand, and I know you'd help if you could. I've been poking
around a bit more, and it turns out that rbash isn't going to buy me all
that much in terms of security anyway, unless I'm using a PATH that
doesn't include regular shells as well.

That's always the problem with edge cases: they're edge cases because
you're doing something out of the ordinary. :)

Honestly, the work-flow issues are probably more important than the
security issues right now. But I'll continue poking through things and
see if I can't uncover what's going on, if for no other reason than that
I'm now deeply curious.
