imagedirectory performance

Tellico creates a temp folder for holding cover images. In my case there are
cca 4000 images in a flat folder (and growing :) )
My question is - would it be benefical to use directory hashing (like most
mail servers, git and others do)? As the image names are md5 sums, a
hierarch based on the
first 2 letter would be easy to do. Any opinions?
