I was thinking to the entry editor. Right now to have multiple images you must
create separate fields, and any of them has an independent tab on the entry
editor window. This could be frustrating if you don't know how may picture of a
book you have, because of you must create a pre-determined number of image
fields also if you will use them only for one entry, and skip them in the other
cases. That's not a major issue obviously, but something like the "allow
multiple values" will probably make things easyer for managing more than one or
two images per entry.
But I had a look at the entry template and you're right, maybe it is more
complicate than I expected. The template counts images fields to build the
structure of the output and grouping all images into a single field should cause
problems in printing on screen the entry view. In addition to it the template
must be as general as possible, because of everyone can customize the data
structure of his collection and results are unpredictable.
I wish I could understand a bit this sort of things, unfortunately I can't and
so I'm of little help, and also for my suggestions is difficult for me to
evaluate the right effort/results ratio.
